Joseph Sullivan was called to the Ontario Bar in 1984 and certified as a Specialist in Civil Litigation by the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1992.

He attended McMaster University and studied Mathematics from 1977 to 1979. He attended Osgoode Hall Law School and graduated in 1982.

His Articles of Clerkship were with John D. Bowlby, Q.C. (later the Honourable Mr. Justice John Bowlby of The Supreme Court of Ontario) and Frederick Luchak, Q.C., of Bowlby, Luchak, Thoman, Lofchik and Soule.

Joseph went on to be a founding partner of the firm Luchak Lofchik Sullivan in 1989. When Mr. Luchak left the firm to act as counsel in Bermuda and Mr. Lofchik was appointed to the bench, Joseph founded his own firm.

In 2006, Joseph Sullivan joined forces with Arthur Camporese, an expert trial lawyer and accomplished practitioner in his own right, to form the premier personal injury and insurance practice in the city.

Since April 2007 The National Post newspaper recognized Joseph Sullivan as one of Canada’s Best Lawyers (http://www.nationalpost.com).

Since the Best Lawyers in Canada directory was first published, Joseph Sullivan has been yearly listed solely by a vote of fellow lawyers, for inclusion under the Personal Injury Litigation section for the city of Hamilton (http://www.bestlawyers.com).

Joseph has been married since 1986 to Siona Sullivan, a litigation lawyer in St. Catharines (www.svsullivanlaw.com) and has three sons: Brendan, Ryan and Sean.

Joseph’s practice focuses on personal injury, insurance and commercial arbitration or litigation matters for both plaintiffs and insurers with a special interest in bad faith claims and catastrophic injuries. He appears before Courts of all levels and has an extensive arbitration practice before the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (http://www.fsco.gov.on.ca).

He also provides mediation services as mediator and as counsel.

His defence practice extensively deals in first and third party insurance litigation claims on behalf of some of North America’s largest and most successful insurers including fire and property and life claims.

He has spoken and/or chaired numerous Continuing Legal Education programmes for the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Hamilton Law Association, the Canadian Bar Association (http://www.cba.org/CBA) and The Advocates’ Society.

Joseph Sullivan is a Past President of the Hamilton Law Association (2005) and trustee from 2000 – 2006, an association founded in 1879 and representing nearly a thousand lawyers in the city (http://www.hamiltonlaw.on.ca).

Joseph Sullivan is a Past President of the Hamilton Medical Legal Society (1996) and trustee 1989-1996.

He is a past Trustee and Chairperson of St. Joseph’s Villa’s Board of Directors . St. Joseph’s Villa is recognized as one of Ontario’s largest and most innovative long term care homes with 378 beds, a pioneering institution of the Canadian health care system when it was founded in 187 and a non-profit charitable organization owned by the St. Joseph’s Health System (http://www.sjv.on.ca).

Joseph is also a past member of the Board of Directors of St. Joseph’s Health Care System, Hamilton, Ontario which operations include St. Joseph’s Hospital (Hamilton), St. Mary’s Hospital (Kitchener), St. Joseph’s Hospital (Guelph), St. Joseph’s Villa (Dundas) (http://www.stjosham.on.ca) and a present budget of approximately half a billion dollars.

He is a past member of the Board of Directors of The United Way of Burlington and Hamilton (http://www.uwaybh.ca).

Joe was the Regional Senior Bencher for the Law Society of Upper Canada from 2011-2015.

Joseph has also been retained by the Law Society of Upper Canada to review the Civil Litigation Bar Admission Course Materials for students writing its Licensing Examinations (http://rc.lsuc.on.ca/jsp/licensingprocesslawyer).

He also was a member of the Law Society’s Civil Litigation Specialty Committee, a committee that made accreditation recommendations for new Certified Specialists to the Law Society of Upper Canada (http://rc.lsuc.on.ca/jsp/csp/index.jsp).

Joseph has also completed the Advocates’ Society Negotiation Workshop taught by members of the Harvard Mediation Project (http://www.advocates.ca and http://www.law.harvard.edu/academics/clinical).

He also has taken the Stitt Handy ADR Workshop (http://www.sfhgroup.com).

Amongst others, he authored: Three Methods of Tort Compensation published in the Advocates Quarterly (1983) by Ontario’s Advocates’ Society.
